A must-see destination, La Rochelle has no shortage of attractions to charm its visitors. A port city par excellence with its four ports, the White City captivates all who lay eyes on the sun-drenched white stone from which the buildings are constructed. The omnipresent ocean stands out as the symbol of the city, sweeping visitors' nostrils with its sea spray. The old stones also have their say in this landscape bordered by the Atlantic Ocean, where low coasts, sheer cliffs, and sandy shores alternate. International trade has fostered a unique architectural blend, subject to various influences from across the seas. Not far from the shore, the islands of Ré, Oléron, and Aix form a natural barrier preventing the ocean swell from disturbing the calm of the ancient city. Initially a fishing village founded in the 10th century, it took only two millennia to become a major port. Its dominance in maritime trade lasted until the 15th century. But its rebellious spirit was not to the King's liking, and it succumbed to Richelieu's siege in the 16th century. Despite its lost independence, La Rochelle has continued its economic growth over the centuries, right up to the present day, thanks to its proximity to the ocean, which remains at the center of maritime trade.
