Initially a fishing village founded in the 10th century, it took only two millennia to become a major port. Its dominance in maritime trade lasted until the 15th century. But its rebellious spirit was not to the King's liking, and it succumbed to Richelieu's siege in the 16th century. Despite its lost independence, La Rochelle has continued its economic growth over the centuries, right up to the present day, thanks to its proximity to the ocean, which remains at the center of maritime trade.
